Sad news to report: citing “personal reasons,” Neil Young has canceled the 2017 Bridge School Benefit Concert. For thirty years, the BSBC has been a Bay Area staple of the concert season and more often than not, it included powerful, rare onstage collaborations by some of the music world’s most respected artists.
Founded with his ex-wife Pegi in 1986, the concert was intended to raise money for the school they founded when they couldn’t find the right place to educate their young son Ben, who has cerebral palsy. Everyone from Pearl Jam to David Bowie and Arcade Fire to REM have played the concert over the years, and most recently, Cage the Elephant‘s acoustic set there last summer inspired their acoustic tour and upcoming Unpeeled album (out this summer).
