Few brewers have had the overwhelming impact on the local beer scene that Colby Chandler has. In addition to a quarter-century of production and recipe development for Ballast Point Brewing, which included co-creation of the world-famous Sculpin IPA, he was perhaps the most influential president of the San Diego Brewers Guild, ushering in San Diego Beer Week and that organization’s annual beer festival. After a few years of “practicing retirement”, he’s back in the industry with a new entity, All Things Agave. That company crafts and imports numerous agave-based beverages, including the pair the crew samples this week, an agave cream ale and a collaboratively conceived Belgian-style agave table beer.
